The Challenge
A major airport operations trade show was fighting for survival. The post-pandemic landscape had shifted the exhibitor base dramatically and visitor numbers were falling. Our client needed to understand what audiences actually valued – and whether the show could remain viable without its anchor attractions.
The Work
We surveyed attendees and deployed AI-powered social network analysis across 28,630 accounts following the show and its competitors online. The analysis exposed a 57% audience overlap with competitors – but also revealed a hidden advantage: audiences weren’t primarily there to shop for equipment. They craved peer validation, live demonstrations and cross-sector learning. We identified five distinct audience types and developed four strategic positioning territories, stress-testing each against desirability, credibility and viability.
The Impact
The work revealed a counterintuitive truth: the shift in exhibitors wasn’t a crisis – it was an opportunity. Rather than competing as an equipment showcase, the client had a credible, distinctive path to becoming the definitive platform for airport operations excellence. The framework gave the business clear direction to invest in live operational showcases, benchmarking tools and structured networking – transforming a passive trade fair into an active industry hub.
